Skanda Shasthi 2009

Skandha Shasthi is celebrated every year by the Sri Muthukrishna Swami Mission. This year, it was conducted at Magara Jyothi Hall in Coimbatore, from October 19th to October 25th. On the 18th, a chandi homam took place in the morning, followed by the staging of the story of Kanni Kannan in the evening.

From the 19th, the Shashti pooja commenced, starting with a Koe-Pooja at dawn, followed by abishekam for Lord Muruga. Abishekams included milk, honey, chandanam, kumkum, panja-amrithm, curd, coconut water, rice, viboothi,thirumanjanam. Following abishekam, Lord Muruga was received at the hall entrance on a pallaku. Archanai was performed, followed offering of various fine arts including Bharatha Natyam, Percussions, vocals and various instruments.

In the afternoon, a homam was conducted with various mantras.

In the evening, the Kandapuranam was enacted on stage in seven parts as an offering to Lord Muruga.

At the end of each pooja, Swami would deliver a speech covering various aspects of Shasthi, it's significance and importance as well as explain various subtle details of the Kandapuranam.

On the 6th day of Shasthi, before dawn, hundreds of devotees,carrying kavadis, milk pots and fire, lead by Mathaji Vithamma, took part in a patha yathri ,escorting Lord Muruga to Maratha Malai, fourteen kilometers away from Coimbatore. At the hill, Lord Muruga was taken to a temple and milk abishekam was performed for him there.

On the morning of the seventh day, Lord Muruga's wedding to Valli and Deivayanai was performed, ending the Skanda Shasthi celebration. In the evening, a vocal concert by given by Anuradha Sri Ram and Sri Ram Parthasarathy.
